Chipolo One

The Chipolo One, a small and colorful plastic disc with a hole, has undergone hands-on testing to assess its capabilities against competitors such as Apple’s AirTag and Tile. Unfortunately, this tracker’s crowd-sourced finding network fails to match the performance of its counterparts. During a 24-hour trial outside the bustling student union at UNM, no alert was received indicating that a member of the Chipolo community had detected the item. However, upon further examination, the device proved its worth and earned a place on my keyring, showcasing its usefulness in everyday scenarios.

To operate the Chipolo One, users must download a user-friendly app that seamlessly pairs new trackers and is compatible with both Apple and Android devices. Remarkably, the tracking experience on both iPhone and Galaxy phones was nearly identical, functioning equally well on both platforms. With a noticeably louder ring compared to other trackers, lost items were quickly recovered within the confines of a home.

Unlike its competitors, the Chipolo One boasted an immediate response between pressing the Ring to Find button and hearing the trill. While the delay in AirTag’s response was never more than a few seconds, Tiles generally connected and rang within ten seconds. Although not a significant delay, it could potentially contribute to the stress of rushing out the door.

The standout feature of the Chipolo One was its exceptional separation alerts. Merely venturing half to two blocks away (an average distance of 350 feet) triggered an alert, prompting a question about any forgotten items. Neither AirTag nor Tile managed to match Chipolo’s promptness in this regard. The consistency of these alerts held true whether an item was left at home, in a coffee shop, or inside a car.

AirTag

AirTags, which seamlessly integrate with the Find My app, have the advantage of not requiring any additional downloads. If you’re familiar with the app, using AirTags will come naturally to you. In terms of sound, they are the most discreet among the trackers we tested, ringing for only seven seconds each time you press the Play Sound button. If you fail to locate your item immediately, you’ll need to keep pressing the button, but unfortunately, AirTags cannot be used to ring your phone.

When it comes to separation alerts, AirTags consistently deliver a notification when you move approximately 1,200 feet away from the item, equivalent to about three square blocks. You have the option to disable separation alerts for specific trackers and designate certain locations, like your home or workplace, as exceptions for these notifications.

AirTags possess a unique feature not found in any other tracker—an ability to utilize the ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless protocol. This allows for a fascinating game of hot and cold when the item is within approximately 25 feet of your iPhone. Your iPhone’s screen displays directional arrows and a distance meter, guiding you to the item without the need to ring it.

Tile Pro

Tile offers compatibility with both Android and Apple devices, but the user experience is notably superior on Android. The connectivity issues and lack of alerts experienced with iPhones were absent when testing with a Galaxy phone. However, it’s important to note that Tile requires a subscription for separation alerts. Tile Premium is available at $3 per month or $30 per year, providing additional benefits such as location history and item reimbursement of up to $100 for registered items. Additionally, Tile stands out as the sole tracker company offering reimbursement. Even without a subscription, they are willing to pay up to $25 for registered items.

The Tile Pro, resembling a key fob with a durable metal keychain hole, exudes a sense of sturdiness. While its ring was slightly quieter than the Tile Mate (78 versus 82 decibels), the Pro boasted a better connectivity range and performed more accurately in finder network tests. Moreover, it is the only Tile device currently equipped with a replaceable battery, which lasts approximately one year.

During the lost-item trials, a friend took the Tile Pro to various locations. After activating the Notify When Found feature, an alert would typically arrive within five to ten minutes, indicating that the lost item had been “found by the community.” The map details were generally accurate within a range of about 100 feet, although on occasions, it erroneously pinpointed the Tile at a neighboring business.

Without the UWB feature, the precise location of the item proved more challenging. In one test, the tracker ended up in a noisy pub. While the directions guided me to the correct location, locating the item would have been difficult without spotting my friend, as the ring function proved ineffective amidst the cacophony.

Tile Slim

The Tile Slim surpasses both the Pro and the Mate in terms of volume, nearly matching the sound level of the loudest tracker in our tests, the Chipolo One. Compatible with both Android and Apple devices, its thick credit card shape is designed to fit into standard wallet slots, although it may struggle to connect when placed inside an RFID-blocking wallet. If you opt for a Tile subscription, the separation alerts activate at a similar distance as the Tile Pro, alerting you when you’re approximately 1,500 feet away from your item.

However, when using an iPhone with Tile trackers, separation alerts were infrequent, and the connection between the phone and tracker was often unreliable, even in close proximity. For iPhone users, the Chipolo Card Spot offers an equally loud option. It operates on Apple’s extensive Find My network and consistently provides left-behind alerts at approximately 1,200 feet.
