Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen or have refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Be a permanent resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Be available to start studies in the UK in September 2025.
  • Hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard or a lower second-class degree with a relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Demonstrate financial need and inability to afford UK study without the scholarship.
  • Disabled applicants who do not meet the academic requirements but can demonstrate their potential for international development may receive a contextualised nomination through the Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum nominator.

Application Procedure

How to Apply for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship

Applications for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships for the 2025/26 academic year are now open, with a deadline of 16:00 BST (15:00 GMT) on 15 October 2024. Applicants must apply using the CSC’s online application system and submit all required supporting documentation. The application process involves:

  • National Nominating Agencies: The main route of application through agencies in eligible Commonwealth countries.
  • Selected NGOs and Charitable Bodies: Selected organisations participate in the scholarship programme.
Each nominator oversees its selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria. The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships. Nominators will put forward candidates to the CSC by December 2024, with applicants being notified of the outcome by July 2025.

Required Documentation

Applicants must include the following supporting documents with their application:

  • Proof of citizenship or refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Full transcripts of all higher education qualifications, including current courses.
  • References from at least two individuals, uploaded in PDF format.
  • Applications will be considered ineligible if any required documentation is not submitted by the closing date.

Selection Process and Notification

Selections are made from the pool of nominations, and being nominated does not guarantee selection. The CSC evaluates candidates based on their academic qualifications, potential to impact development, and alignment with the CSC development themes.

Financial Assistance

Each scholarship covers airfare, tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a warm clothing allowance (if applicable), and a study travel grant. For single parents, a child allowance is provided. Scholars with disabilities receive a full assessment for additional financial support.
