What you'll study

The programme combines intensive language instruction with coursework in literature, history, and linguistic analysis across East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Core study areas typically include modern and classical literary traditions, sociolinguistics, historical and comparative linguistics, phonology and syntax, language acquisition and pedagogy, and methods for textual and field-based research.

Students follow a mix of taught seminars and practicum-based classes: advanced language laboratories, close readings of literary and historical texts in the original language, linguistics seminars that cover theoretical and descriptive approaches, and classes in research methods. Most students also undertake an independent research project or master's thesis under faculty supervision; alternatives may include a capstone project or portfolio that demonstrates applied skills such as translation, language teaching materials, or computational-linguistic analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor's degree or equivalent. A solid academic record in language, literature, linguistics, or a related humanities or social science field is valued. You will be asked to provide academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and a writing sample relevant to your proposed area of study.

Applicants for whom English is not a first language must demonstrate English proficiency through an approved test or other evidence of ability to study in English. Prior coursework in the relevant East Asian language(s) strengthens an application for advanced study; however, motivated candidates with limited prior language study but a clear plan for language acquisition and research may also be considered. Additional materials such as a portfolio of translations or teaching experience can be submitted where relevant.

Common destinations include doctoral study in East Asian studies or linguistics, university and secondary-level language teaching, literary and academic translation, publishing and editorial work, cultural institutions and museums, government and diplomatic service, international NGOs, and roles in global media and consulting. Increasingly, graduates with linguistic and computational skills move into language technology and natural language processing roles in the private sector.
