What you'll study

The PhD programme combines rigorous training in linguistic analysis, philology and literary studies with concentrated language work in an East Asian language (typically Mandarin Chinese, Japanese or Korean). Students follow a mix of core and elective seminars that include historical linguistics, syntax, phonology, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and language typology alongside courses in literary history, textual criticism, genre studies and cultural theory.

Typical elements of the programme include:

• Advanced language proficiency: systematic training to reach research-level reading and writing ability in one or more East Asian languages.
• Foundational linguistics: seminars in phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics to support linguistic research on East Asian languages.
• Area and period studies: in-depth study of classical and modern literatures and historical linguistics relevant to your language area.
• Research methods and fieldwork: training in archival work, textual criticism, corpus methods, and qualitative and quantitative field methodologies.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a strong undergraduate degree and, for many candidates, a relevant master’s degree in linguistics, East Asian studies, comparative literature or a closely related field. Admissions committees look for evidence of academic preparation for advanced research, including coursework in language study and in linguistic or literary analysis.
