What you'll study

This programme brings together natural science, social science and practice-based learning. Core modules typically cover climate science and Earth systems, environmental chemistry and ecology, quantitative methods for sustainability (statistics and GIS), and foundations of environmental economics and policy. Students study how natural processes interact with social, political and economic systems, with courses on urban sustainability and planning, energy systems and transitions, resource management, and environmental justice.

Teaching combines lectures, seminars, laboratory and field work, and data-driven projects. Many curricula include a senior seminar or capstone project in which students design and implement an applied research or practice-based project, often in partnership with a community organisation, municipal agency or research centre. Electives enable specialisation in areas such as cities and infrastructure, climate adaptation, sustainable business and finance, food systems, or conservation and biodiversity.

Entry requirements

Columbia looks for academically strong applicants with evidence of quantitative skills and a genuine interest in sustainability. Typical applicants will have a rigorous secondary-school curriculum including mathematics and at least one laboratory science (biology, chemistry or physics); coursework in social studies, economics or geography is also helpful. Admissions decisions are based on the whole application: high-school record, personal essays, teacher recommendations and any extracurricular or work experience related to environmental or civic engagement.

International applicants must meet Columbia's English language proficiency expectations and provide documentation equivalent to US secondary qualifications.
