Columbia University's master's-level nursing programme prepares registered nurses for advanced practice, leadership, research and clinical specialist roles across health-care settings. It suits experienced RNs and recent BSN graduates seeking advanced clinical skills, research competency or managerial preparation within an academic medical centre context.

What you'll study

The master's pathway is built around advanced nursing science, evidence-based practice, leadership and population health. Core coursework typically covers advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology, nursing research methods, biostatistics, health-policy and health-systems science, and nursing informatics. Depending on the chosen concentration—Nursing Administration, Nursing Research or Clinical Nursing—students take specialist modules and complete a supervised practicum or capstone project.

  • Nursing Administration: organisational leadership, finance and budgeting in health care, quality improvement, change management, human resource strategies, strategic planning and practicum experience in management.
  • Nursing Research: research design and methods, advanced statistics, grant writing, data analysis, ethics in research, and a thesis or major research project conducted with faculty mentorship.
  • Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical assessment and management for specific populations, clinical decision-making, evidence-based interventions, simulation and extended clinical practicum hours with preceptors in acute or community settings.

Instruction combines seminars, skills and simulation labs, clinical placements in affiliated hospitals and community agencies, and independent scholarship. Full-time and part-time study options are generally available, and the programme usually culminates in a capstone practicum or a research thesis depending on concentration.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Typical applicants hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and an active, unrestricted RN licence; applicants with a bachelor’s in another discipline may be considered if they meet prerequisite coursework and professional criteria. Admissions committees usually review academic transcripts, a current résumé or CV, professional references, a personal statement describing career goals and fit with the chosen concentration, and evidence of clinical experience.

Some concentrations or research-focused pathways may expect prior coursework in statistics or research methods. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. Selected applicants may be invited to an interview.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a range of advanced roles across hospitals, community health organisations, academic settings and policy environments. Common career paths include:

  • Nurse manager, director of nursing or other administrative leadership positions overseeing units or programmes.
  • Clinical nurse specialist or advanced clinical roles delivering and coordinating specialised patient care.
  • Clinical researcher, research coordinator or investigator working on clinical trials and nursing science projects.
  • Quality and safety specialist, informatics nurse, clinical educator or policy advisor within health systems and public agencies.
  • Preparation for doctoral study (PhD or DNP) for those pursuing academic or high-level research careers.

Why study at Columbia University

Columbia's nursing programme is embedded within a major academic medical centre and benefits from strong clinical partnerships, multidisciplinary research centres and access to specialised facilities. Students can draw on faculty with active clinical, research and policy experience, engage with clinical placements at prominent hospitals and community partners in New York City, and tap into university-wide resources across public health, medicine, business and social work for interdisciplinary learning.

The location and institutional connections create opportunities for advanced clinical training, participation in funded research projects, and exposure to diverse patient populations and complex health-care systems—preparing graduates to assume leadership, specialist clinical and research roles on completion of the master's programme.
