The BSW curriculum combines general education coursework with core social work subjects and supervised field education. Early years develop a foundation in human behaviour, social welfare history, introduction to social work, and research methods. Entry to the BSW major may be competitive and typically requires completion of certain prerequisites such as English/composition, introductory psychology, and introductory sociology or related social sciences. Departments commonly ask for a minimum cumulative GPA, a personal statement outlining interest in social work, and one or more references.

Because supervised field placements are a programme requirement, successful applicants must be able to meet conditions set by placement agencies, which can include background checks, immunisation or health screening, and demonstration of professional conduct. Transfer applicants should provide transcripts and course descriptions for evaluation of prior coursework.

Graduates with a BSW work in a wide range of settings providing direct services, case management and community support. Common entry-level roles include child welfare worker, school support staff, case manager, residential services worker, mental health technician, corrections or probation support roles, and positions within non-profit community organisations.

The BSW also provides a pathway to postgraduate study: many graduates enter Master of Social Work (MSW) programmes to pursue clinical licensure or specialist leadership roles. Skills developed in the programme—including assessment, intervention planning, advocacy, programme evaluation and cultural competence—are also transferable to roles in public policy, health services and community development.
