What you'll study

The programme builds on foundational nursing practice to develop advanced competencies across leadership, research and clinical practice. Core graduate-level topics typically include advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology for advanced practice, healthcare systems and policy, quality improvement, and research methods and statistics.

Students choose one of three pathways:

• Nursing Administration: coursework focuses on organisational leadership, financial and human resource management in healthcare, strategic planning, legal/ethical issues, quality and safety initiatives, and a practicum in administration or unit-based leadership.
• Nursing Research: emphasis is placed on research design, biostatistics, evidence synthesis, implementation science and a substantial research project or thesis that prepares graduates to lead evidence-based initiatives or to continue to doctoral study.
• Clinical Nursing: builds advanced clinical assessment and management skills in specific patient populations or specialty areas, with supervised clinical practicum hours and coursework in advanced diagnostics, care coordination and multidisciplinary practice.

Programme delivery commonly mixes seminar-style courses, online learning components and supervised clinical placements. Clinical hours and a capstone project, practicum or thesis are required depending on the chosen pathway.

Entry requirements

• A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution or an equivalent nursing degree recognised by the university.
• Current, unrestricted RN licence in the United States (or eligibility to obtain a state licence for clinical placements, as required).
• A competitive undergraduate GPA; some programmes specify a minimum GPA for admission to graduate study.
• Clinical experience as a registered nurse is usually required or strongly recommended, particularly for the clinical and administration pathways.
• Supporting documentation including a personal statement or statement of purpose, current curriculum vitae or resume, and professional references or letters of recommendation.
• Completion of any prerequisite coursework specified by the programme (for example in statistics or research methods) if not covered in prior study.
• International applicants may need to provide evidence of English language proficiency and evaluation of overseas credentials.
