What you'll study

This programme combines core linguistic theory with applied language study and literary analysis across Romance languages such as Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. You will study foundational topics in linguistics—phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics—alongside modules in sociolinguistics, language acquisition and historical Romance linguistics. Literary and cultural courses cover major authors, genres and periods from Romance-language traditions and emphasise critical reading and comparative approaches.

• Introductory and intermediate language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in one or more Romance languages
• Core linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics
• Applied areas: sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, second-language acquisition, translation and interpretation
• Romance-language literatures: surveys of narrative, poetry and drama; literary theory and criticism

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically required to hold a recognised secondary school qualification for entry to an undergraduate degree. Admissions consider a combination of academic transcripts, personal statement and, where applicable, standardised test results. Prior study in a Romance language is advantageous but not always mandatory; beginners may start on introductory language sequences.
