What you'll study

The programme is organised as a progressive, studio-based curriculum that combines design, technical and theoretical learning. • Design studios: iterative, site-oriented projects that develop concept making, visual communication, model-making and digital representation skills.
• Plant materials and planting design: identification, selection and ecological use of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants for designed landscapes.
• Site engineering: grading, drainage, stormwater BMPs, and basic civil principles as applied to landscape projects.
• Technical media and digital skills: AutoCAD, GIS, 3D modelling, rendering and fabrication techniques used in contemporary practice.
• Landscape history and theory: cultural and theoretical frameworks that inform landscape design and planning decisions.
• Planning and policy: land-use planning, urban design principles and regulatory processes that shape public and private landscapes.
• Fieldwork and practicum: site visits, plant inventories, service-learning projects and an industry internship or practicum in later years.
• Capstone or advanced studio: comprehensive projects synthesising technical, ecological and conceptual skills for real or hypothetical clients.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school diploma or equivalent. Typical application components include academic transcripts, a portfolio of creative work (sketches, design projects, photographs or other visual evidence of design interest), and a personal statement describing interest in landscape architecture and planning.

• Recommended preparation: courses in mathematics, physical sciences, environmental science, art or design, and computer graphics are advantageous.
