What you'll study

The programme provides advanced training across three interrelated areas: German language and applied linguistics, literary and cultural studies, and historical and comparative Germanic linguistics. You will build advanced proficiency in German while studying linguistic theory, research methods and interdisciplinary approaches to German literature and culture.

• Core linguistic topics: syntax, phonology, morphology, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, discourse analysis and research methods in linguistics.
• Literature and culture: modern and contemporary German literature, literary theory, film and media studies, intellectual history, and cultural analysis of the German-speaking world.
• Applied and professional work: German pedagogy and curriculum design, translation and interpreting practice, language assessment, and corpus-based methods for language description.
• Research and capstone options: students may choose a thesis route involving original research under faculty supervision or a non-thesis track with a capstone project, practicum, or comprehensive examination.
• Electives and language practice: seminars in specialised topics (e.g. dialectology, heritage language maintenance, digital humanities), advanced conversation and composition, and opportunities for internship or supervised teaching as a graduate assistant.

Coursework is typically a mix of small seminars and applied courses. Independent study and directed-research credits allow you to tailor the programme to interests such as historical Germanic linguistics, translation studies, or contemporary language pedagogy. Kent State also supports study-abroad and exchange options with partner institutions in German-speaking countries to deepen linguistic and cultural immersion.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably with substantial coursework in German, linguistics, modern languages, literature or a closely related field. Typical application materials include:

• Letters of recommendation (usually two or three) from academic or professional referees.
