What you'll study

The MPA curriculum builds core competencies in public management, policy analysis and ethical leadership. Typical core modules cover public administration theory, quantitative methods for policy and management, public budgeting and financial management, public personnel and human resources, and administrative law and ethics.

• Policy analysis and program evaluation — techniques for designing, implementing and assessing public programmes.
• Public budgeting and financial management — budgeting processes, fiscal analysis and financial reporting in the public sector.
• Organisational behaviour and human resource management — leadership, labour relations and performance management in public organisations.

Students generally complete a combination of elective courses that allow specialisation — such as nonprofit management, emergency management, healthcare policy, urban sustainability or data-driven public management — and a culminating experience. The capstone may take the form of a practicum or internship with a governmental agency or nonprofit, or a research-based project addressing a real-world policy problem. Flexible delivery options are often available, including part-time and evening classes to accommodate working professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Admissions typically consider academic transcripts, a personal statement or statement of purpose describing career goals and reasons for pursuing the MPA, a current résumé or CV, and letters of recommendation.

• Prior coursework in social sciences, statistics or public affairs can be helpful but is not always mandatory.
• Professional experience in public service, the nonprofit sector or related fields is welcome and can strengthen an application.
• Some applicants may be asked to provide GRE scores, although standardised testing requirements are increasingly flexible; prospective students should check the programme's current policy.
• Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through an accepted test unless exempted.
