What you'll study

The programme combines core philosophical training with in-depth study of Chinese intellectual traditions and their cultural contexts. Students take coursework in primary texts and interpretive traditions (Confucianism, Daoism, Mohism, Legalism), modern and contemporary Chinese philosophy, and comparative work that places Chinese thought in dialogue with Western philosophical problems.

• Area studies and cultural modules: courses on Chinese intellectual history, religion and ritual, social and political thought in historical perspective, and cultural practices that shape philosophical reflection.
• Research methods and professional development: seminars on research design, historiographical methods, archival research, and academic writing; opportunities for teaching experience and conference presentation.
• Capstone: a supervised thesis or major research project that demonstrates original engagement with Chinese philosophical texts, issues, or comparative questions.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree (BA or equivalent) with strong academic performance in philosophy, Asian studies, religious studies, history or a closely related field. Prior coursework in philosophy or in Chinese/East Asian studies is recommended but not always required if the applicant demonstrates clear preparation and motivation.

• Academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
• Statement of purpose outlining research interests, reasons for specialising in Chinese philosophy and culture, and career aims.
• Letters of recommendation (typically two or three) from academic referees who can speak to your scholarly potential.
• Writing sample in English that demonstrates analytic ability and engagement with philosophical or historical material (e.g. an essay from undergraduate coursework).
• Proof of English proficiency for international applicants (accepted tests and minimum scores determined by the university).
