What you'll study

The Applied Mathematics degree combines core mathematical theory with computational practice and applications drawn from science, business and industry. You will study topics such as calculus, linear algebra, ordinary and partial differential equations, probability and mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, mathematical modelling, optimization and operations research.

Coursework typically blends lectures and problem-solving seminars with hands-on computing labs using languages and tools common to industry (for example Python, MATLAB or R). The programme includes:

• Foundational mathematics: multivariable calculus, linear algebra and discrete mathematics.
• Modelling and analysis: differential equations, perturbation methods and applied mathematical modelling.
• Computation and data: numerical methods, scientific computing and introductory to advanced statistics/data analysis.
• Applications: courses that apply mathematical methods to fields such as mathematical biology, economics/finance, engineering or environmental science.

The degree is nested within Keuka’s liberal arts framework, so you will also complete general education courses in writing, humanities and natural sciences to develop communication and critical-thinking skills valued by employers.

Entry requirements

Admission to the Applied Mathematics programme requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a strong preparation in mathematics. Applicants are typically expected to have completed courses in algebra, geometry and precalculus, with calculus preferred.

Keuka College evaluates applications holistically. You should provide academic transcripts and any available information about mathematics coursework or quantitative experience. Standardised test scores (SAT/ACT) may be submitted but are not always required; the admissions office publishes current testing policy. Placement testing may be used to determine the appropriate start point in calculus and other mathematics courses, and faculty advising will guide course selection for incoming students.
