What you'll study

The Religion major combines courses in biblical studies, theology, history of Christianity, comparative world religions and applied ethics with skills in critical thinking, research and pastoral practice. Core modules typically include Old Testament Studies, New Testament Studies, Christian Theology, Introduction to Ethics, and History of Christianity. Elective options often allow study of topics such as Judaism and Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Liberation Theology, Feminist Theologies, Ritual and Liturgy, Religion and Culture, and Religion in America.

The programme emphasises both academic and applied learning. Students undertake courses in research methods in religion and complete a capstone project or senior seminar that integrates textual study, historical context and contemporary application. Opportunities for service-learning, a practicum or internship with campus ministry, local parishes, schools or community organisations are regularly integrated into the curriculum, alongside options for study abroad or cross-disciplinary study with philosophy, sociology and education.

Applicants are expected to hold a high school diploma or equivalent with a record of steady academic achievement. Typical application materials include official secondary-school transcripts, a personal statement outlining interest in religious studies, and at least one academic reference. Marywood considers the whole application; prior coursework in religion or theology is helpful but not required. Mature applicants with relevant life or ministry experience are also encouraged to apply and may be asked to provide additional references or a portfolio.
