What you'll study

The PhD curriculum emphasises the development of independent researchers and teacher-scholars. Core study areas include advanced research design and biostatistics, qualitative methods, measurement and instrument development, and theoretical foundations of nursing science. Concentration-specific coursework deepens expertise in one of three pathways:

• Nursing Administration: organisational theory, health-care systems and policy, strategic leadership, quality improvement, and implementation science.
• Nursing Research: advanced quantitative methods, mixed-methods designs, grant writing, longitudinal and multilevel analysis, and methodological innovation for nursing studies.
• Clinical Nursing: clinical scholarship and translational research, advanced pathophysiology related to the chosen specialty, evidence-based practice implementation, and clinical outcomes measurement.

All students complete a series of research laboratories and seminars, teaching practicums to prepare for academic roles, and an original doctoral dissertation that contributes new knowledge to the field. The programme combines coursework, mentored research, and practicum experiences in clinical or organisational settings, and typically includes regular doctoral seminars, comprehensive examinations, and dissertation proposal and defence requirements.

Entry requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the United States or equivalent professional registration for international applicants.
• A master's degree in nursing (MSN, MNS) or a related health discipline; applicants with a DNP are considered on a case-by-case basis with emphasis on research preparation.
• Evidence of academic readiness for doctoral study such as a strong graduate transcript, letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees, and a statement of purpose outlining research interests.
• A curriculum vitae or résumé detailing clinical experience, publications or presentations, and any prior research involvement.
• Potential for fit with the programme's research strengths; applicants are encouraged to identify faculty with shared research interests during the application process.
• International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements and provide documentation of degree equivalency as required by the university.

Graduates are prepared for careers in a variety of research and leadership roles. Common career paths include academic faculty positions (teaching and research), principal investigator on clinical trials and funded research projects, senior nursing leadership and administration in hospitals or health systems, clinical nurse scientist roles that bridge practice and research, and positions in health policy, public health agencies, and non-profit research organisations.

PhD holders are qualified to lead evidence-based practice initiatives, design and evaluate interventions to improve patient outcomes, secure external research funding, and mentor the next generation of nurses and researchers.
