What you'll study

The programme combines core coursework in sociological theory and research methods with electives that allow specialisation in areas such as social stratification, race and ethnicity, gender, community and rural studies, criminology, and work and organisations. Students typically complete advanced classes in quantitative analysis (including multivariate statistics), qualitative methods (interviewing, ethnography, content analysis), and contemporary sociological theory. Instruction emphasises applied research skills: study design, data collection, data management and interpretive presentation of findings.

Students choose between a thesis and a non-thesis option. The thesis route involves original empirical research under faculty supervision and a formal defence; the non-thesis route may require an applied practicum or a major research paper. Seminars and reading courses are available for students preparing for doctoral study. Practical components can include internship placements with regional agencies, community-based research projects and opportunities to work as research or teaching assistants.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in sociology or a related social science discipline. Competitive candidates demonstrate strong preparation in social science research methods and statistics, though students with quantitative skills developed through other disciplines may be considered. Typical application materials include official academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining research interests and career goals, two or three letters of recommendation, and a curriculum vitae or résumé. A writing sample that demonstrates analytic ability is often requested.

For international applicants, proof of English language proficiency is required; recognised tests such as TOEFL or IELTS are commonly accepted. The department may consider professional experience in lieu of some academic prerequisites on a case-by-case basis. GRE scores are accepted where provided but check the department for current testing policies.
