What you'll study

The BSN curriculum builds a foundation in biological and behavioural sciences, nursing theory, clinical skills and professional practice. Early semesters cover anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology and lifespan development, while core nursing modules introduce assessment, fundamentals of nursing, medical–surgical nursing and mental health nursing.

Later coursework emphasises complex clinical decision‑making, community and public health nursing, maternal and newborn care, paediatrics and leadership. The programme includes simulation‑based skills labs and sequential supervised clinical placements in hospitals, clinics and community settings.

Students choose one of three focused pathways to tailor their degree:

• Nursing Administration — courses in health‑care management, organisational behaviour, quality improvement, budgeting and leadership practicum to prepare graduates for supervisory and management roles.
• Nursing Research — modules in research methods, evidence‑based practice, statistics and a research project or capstone that develops skills to evaluate and apply research in clinical settings.
• Clinical Nursing — advanced clinical electives and practicum time in speciality areas (for example critical care, emergency nursing or community health) to deepen hands‑on practice and clinical reasoning.

The degree culminates with integrative clinical experiences and preparation for the national licensure examination for registered nurses.

Entry requirements

• Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or recognised qualification) with a strong grade profile in science and maths subjects.
• Prerequisite college coursework in anatomy & physiology, microbiology, chemistry and statistics, or equivalent high‑school preparation; exact prerequisites are specified by the School of Nursing.
• A competitive cumulative GPA in prior study; transfer applicants are assessed on college record and fulfilment of prerequisites.
• Satisfactory completion of any required entrance assessments and a personal statement outlining motivation for nursing.
• Evidence of immunisations, current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and clearance of background and drug screening requirements prior to clinical placements.
• Recommended but not always mandatory: prior health‑care exposure or volunteer experience in clinical settings to demonstrate commitment to nursing.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify to sit the national licensure exam for registered nurses and enter clinical practice across acute care, community health, primary care and long‑term care settings. Career paths commonly include staff nurse roles in medical‑surgical units, critical care, emergency departments, maternal and child health and mental health services.

Those who follow the Nursing Administration pathway move into charge nurse and managerial positions, quality improvement roles or health‑services administration. Graduates of the Nursing Research pathway are prepared for roles supporting evidence‑based practice, clinical outcomes projects and as a foundation for postgraduate study in nursing research or clinical specialities. The Clinical Nursing pathway supports progression into speciality clinical practice and provides a strong basis for advanced practice nursing or clinical educator roles after further postgraduate qualifications.
