What you'll study

This master's-level programme combines core public‑health subjects with specialised veterinary epidemiology and One Health modules. Students develop quantitative and qualitative skills for disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and risk analysis, and learn to apply these to animal and zoonotic diseases in local, national and international contexts.

• Core public health modules – Biostatistics and data analysis, research methods and study design, public‑health policy and programme planning, and principles of disease prevention and control.
• Veterinary epidemiology modules – Principles of veterinary epidemiology, infectious disease dynamics in animal populations, surveillance system design and evaluation, and field investigation methods.
• One Health and zoonoses – Ecology of zoonotic pathogens, integrated human–animal–environmental health approaches, food safety and antimicrobial resistance.
• Applied skills – Geographic information systems (GIS) for disease mapping, laboratory diagnostics and interpretation, outbreak simulation and modelling, and statistical packages used for epidemiological analysis.
• Research project or dissertation – A supervised independent research project addressing a real‑world problem in veterinary public health or One Health, demonstrating applied epidemiological methods and policy relevance.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, animal science, biological sciences, public health or a closely related discipline. Candidates with substantial professional experience in veterinary practice, laboratory science, public health or disease control may be considered if they can demonstrate appropriate learning and commitment to graduate study.

• Evidence of academic proficiency at undergraduate level (transcripts or equivalent).
• For many applicants, professional qualification or relevant work experience in veterinary practice, animal health surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, or public‑health roles strengthens an application.
• Demonstrated quantitative ability is expected; some programmes may require completion of preparatory modules if quantitative skills are limited.
• English language proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English, demonstrated by recognised test scores or equivalent evidence of prior tertiary study in English.

Career prospects

Graduates gain skills applicable to careers in animal health, public health agencies, international organisations and research institutions. Typical roles include epidemiologist for animal or zoonotic diseases, surveillance or outbreak investigation officer, public health advisor focused on zoonoses or food safety, laboratory scientist with epidemiological responsibilities, and policy analyst for One Health programmes.

Alumni may work in government veterinary services, national public‑health agencies, non‑governmental organisations, international bodies (for example in humanitarian or development programmes), or academic and research settings. The programme also prepares students for further research at doctoral level.
