What you'll study

The bachelor-level nursing curriculum blends foundational sciences, nursing theory and extensive clinical practice. Core topics typically include anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, pharmacology and health assessment. Nursing-specific modules cover adult health, maternal–child nursing, paediatrics, mental health and community/public health nursing.

Advanced and pathway-specific study emphasises:

• Nursing Administration: leadership and management in healthcare, human resources and staffing, healthcare policy, budgeting and quality improvement.
• Nursing Research: research methods, statistics for healthcare, evidence-based practice, critical appraisal of literature and translating research into practice.
• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical decision-making, complex care management, interprofessional practice and specialty clinical rotations in acute care, critical care, community settings and outpatient services.

Practical learning is emphasised through simulation labs, skills workshops and supervised clinical placements across hospitals, community health centres and other healthcare settings. Many programmes integrate a capstone project or a research/quality improvement practicum to demonstrate clinical competence and scholarly application.

Entry requirements

Entry routes vary by pathway. For pre-licensure bachelor programmes applicants typically need a secondary school diploma or equivalent, completion of prerequisite science and general education courses, and a competitive GPA. Selection may include prerequisite GPA thresholds, entrance testing or interview components.

For RN-to-BSN entrants applicants must hold an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) licence and usually provide official transcripts from prior nursing education. All applicants should expect requirements that include background checks, immunisation and health screening documentation, basic life support (BLS/CPR) certification, and compliance with clinical placement requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are qualified to work as registered nurses in a broad range of settings including acute hospitals, community and primary care, long-term care, mental health services and outpatient clinics. Specialised pathways further open career options such as charge nurse, unit manager, nurse administrator, clinical nurse specialist, nurse researcher, clinical educator and public health nurse.

Completing a bachelor’s degree also prepares graduates for postgraduate study (master’s level and beyond) and for roles that increasingly require a baccalaureate in nursing, such as leadership, quality improvement, clinical research coordination and advanced practice nursing (where further study is required).
