What you'll study

The Area Studies degree is organised around regional specialisations (for example Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, Europe) and combines disciplinary approaches from history, political science, anthropology, economics and cultural studies. Core modules typically cover comparative regional theory, research methods, and contemporary issues in globalisation and development. Students normally select a regional sequence that includes introductory and advanced courses on regional history, politics and society, alongside at least one foreign language to intermediate or advanced level.

• Core topics: regional history and cultural traditions, political and economic systems, comparative area studies theory, research methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
• Regional modules: in-depth study of a chosen region’s social structures, contemporary politics, migration and diasporas, transnational networks and regional integration.
• Language study: sustained language training relevant to the chosen region (Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Arabic, French, among others).
• Capstone or senior project: independent research project or integrative seminar, often with a strong regional focus and original field-based or archival research.
• Practical experience: options for internships with government agencies, non-governmental organisations, media outlets and international businesses, plus study-abroad or fieldwork opportunities.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school qualification. Admissions criteria typically include a competitive academic record, a personal statement explaining regional interests and language commitment, and one or more academic references. Standardised tests such as the SAT or ACT may be considered where applicable, but FIU evaluates applicants holistically. International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through recognised tests or other approved evidence. Prior language study relevant to the chosen region is advantageous but not always required.
