What you'll study

The programme combines advanced coursework, rigorous research training and a substantive dissertation. Core study areas typically include organisational theory and leadership, educational policy and law, finance and resource management, curriculum and instruction leadership, and equity and diversity in schooling. Research methods training covers both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including advanced statistics, programme evaluation, survey design, case study methods and mixed-methods integration.

• Core leadership and administration: organisational behaviour, strategic planning, change management, governance and ethical leadership in education.
• Policy and law: education policy analysis, governance structures, school law and accountability systems.
• Financial and resource management: budgeting, finance for education, facilities management and human resources in K–12 settings.
• Curriculum and instruction leadership: instructional supervision, curriculum development, assessment and data-informed decision making.
• Research methods and statistics: multivariate statistics, hierarchical linear modelling, programme evaluation, qualitative methods and research design.
• Dissertation: original empirical research culminating in a dissertation that contributes to scholarship and practice in educational administration or supervision.

Depending on the candidate's focus, opportunities exist to undertake applied projects, practicum placements with district partners or collaborative research with faculty on topics such as leadership for equity, organisational improvement, and policy implementation in urban settings.

Entry requirements

• A relevant master’s degree (for example, MEd, EdS or equivalent) from an accredited institution or equivalent preparation in education or a closely related field.
• A strong academic record; programmes typically expect evidence of research potential such as prior graduate coursework or a thesis.
• Supporting documents including a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and professional goals, and academic writing samples or a prior research paper.
• Professional references, usually two or three letters from academic referees and/or supervisors who can attest to leadership potential and scholarly promise.
• Demonstrated professional experience in educational settings is often required or strongly recommended, particularly for practice-oriented specialisms (e.g. district leadership or school administration).
• Some applicants may be asked to attend an interview with faculty; standardised test scores (such as the GRE) may be requested or optional depending on the programme guidelines.
