This programme combines rigorous legal research training with applied professional modules to prepare students for advanced roles in law-related fields. • Legal Research Methods — research design, qualitative and quantitative techniques, and ethical considerations in legal research.
• Advanced Legal Writing and Argumentation — drafting of research articles, policy memos, and technical legal documents aimed at scholarly and practitioner audiences.
• Comparative and International Perspectives — study of comparative law frameworks and international legal instruments relevant to transnational practice.
• Regulatory and Compliance Studies — principles of regulation, compliance programmes, and enforcement across sectors such as finance, health and environment.
• Electives and Interdisciplinary Modules — students choose from electives drawing on FIU’s strengths, for example in immigration, business law, health law, public policy or technology law.
• Capstone or Thesis — a substantial research project or professional practicum that demonstrates mastery of advanced research skills and practical application.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. While a first degree in law is advantageous, applicants with degrees in related disciplines (public policy, business, social sciences) and demonstrable interest in legal research are also considered.

• A completed undergraduate degree with a satisfactory academic record.
• A curriculum vitae and a personal statement outlining research interests and professional goals.
• Academic references (usually one or two) supporting the applicant’s capacity for graduate-level research.
• Evidence of English language proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English (accepted tests and thresholds are set by the university).
• Some applicants may be asked to submit writing samples or participate in an interview; additional documentation may be required for international applicants.
