What you'll study

The programme builds advanced clinical, leadership and research skills through a mix of core graduate nursing courses, concentration-specific modules and supervised clinical practicum or a research capstone. Core topics typically include advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, nursing theory, ethics, population health and evidence-based practice.

• Nursing Administration concentration: organisational leadership, healthcare finance and budgeting, quality and safety improvement, human resource management, policy and strategic planning for nursing services.
• Nursing Research concentration: research design and methods, biostatistics, epidemiology, grant writing, research ethics and a thesis or major research project focused on improving nursing care or outcomes.
• Clinical Nursing concentration: specialty-focused clinical practicum, advanced assessment and intervention skills, care coordination for complex patients, and coursework in clinical decision-making and outcomes measurement. Clinical placements take place in affiliated hospitals, community clinics and specialty care settings across the city.

Programs typically culminate in a supervised practicum, clinical residency or a capstone project that demonstrates synthesis of clinical, administrative or research competencies. Flexible delivery options such as part-time study, evening classes and some online coursework are commonly available to accommodate working RNs.

Entry requirements

• An active, unrestricted RN licence.
• A bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited programme; some campuses may offer bridge options for experienced RNs with an associate degree together with specified prerequisites and course work.
• A competitive cumulative undergraduate GPA; minimums vary by campus and concentration.
• Professional résumé/CV and a personal statement outlining clinical goals, leadership or research interests.
• Two or more professional references, usually from clinical supervisors or faculty who can attest to clinical ability and potential for graduate study.
• Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. International applicants must also demonstrate English proficiency according to CUNY requirements.
• Some concentrations may require prior clinical experience in a relevant area and/or an interview as part of the selection process.
