The programme combines core computing and quantitative courses with social science and design perspectives on information. Applicants are expected to hold a high-school diploma or equivalent with a strong academic record. Competitive candidates typically demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and some exposure to computing or related coursework.
Typical preparation includes courses in algebra/calculus, statistics, and either computer science, information technology or another quantitative subject. The University of Minnesota also considers personal statements, recommendation letters and extracurricular activities that show an interest in technology, problem solving or design. For international applicants, evidence of English language proficiency is required.
