What you'll study

This programme builds a solid foundation in core areas of analytic and historical philosophy while offering specialised modules on Chinese philosophical traditions and their cultural contexts. You will study primary texts and secondary literature, develop close-reading skills in translation and engage with issues in ethics, metaphysics, political philosophy and comparative thought.

• Core philosophy modules: introduction to logic and argumentation, epistemology, ethics, history of Western philosophy.
• Chinese philosophy modules: classical Confucianism (Analects, Mencius, Xunzi), Daoist thought (Laozi, Zhuangzi), Chinese Buddhist philosophy and Neo-Confucian developments.
• Textual and methodological study: close-reading of classical Chinese texts in translation, hermeneutics, methods in comparative philosophy, and courses addressing translation and interpretation issues.
• Cultural and contextual modules: Chinese intellectual history, religion and society, literature and visual culture, and courses that situate philosophical schools within broader historical and social frameworks.
• Language and area studies options: elementary and intermediate Mandarin (where available), introduction to modern Chinese history and contemporary Chinese society to support philosophical study with linguistic and cultural competence.
• Independent research: a final-year capstone dissertation or project supervised by faculty, allowing sustained research on a topic such as Confucian ethics in contemporary debates, Daoist metaphysics, or comparative studies between Chinese and Western thinkers.

Entry requirements

Ripon College looks for applicants with evidence of strong critical reading and writing skills and an interest in philosophical inquiry and cross-cultural study. Typical undergraduate entry routes include successful completion of secondary qualifications with strong grades (for example A-levels, IB, or equivalent). Applicants from systems that use GPAs should demonstrate a competitive academic record plus relevant coursework in humanities or social sciences where possible.

• Academic background: strong performance in humanities subjects is advantageous. Prior study in history, literature, religious studies or a language is useful but not always required.
• English language: applicants whose first language is not English must meet the college’s English proficiency requirements through recognised tests or evidence of prior study in English.
• Personal statement and references: a statement outlining interest in philosophy and Chinese culture and at least one academic reference are normally required. Admissions tutors value evidence of independent reading and engagement with philosophical questions.
• Interview or portfolio: some applicants may be invited to interview or submit short writing samples to demonstrate critical thinking and readiness for philosophical study.
