What you'll study

This programme combines regional specialism with cross-disciplinary methods. You will take core modules in area studies methodology and research design, a sustained language sequence, and a series of region-specific courses that may cover topics such as history, politics, literature, religion, economics and contemporary social issues.

• Core modules: Introduction to Area Studies, Research Methods for Regional Studies, Comparative Area Studies.
• Language study: two to four years of a modern language relevant to your chosen region (for example Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Russian or another offered language), with emphasis on reading, writing and discipline-specific vocabulary.
• Regional modules: thematic and country-focused courses (for example Latin American Politics, Modern East Asian Thought, Middle East Society and Politics, African Cultural Studies, European Integration and Identity).
• Electives: choices from related disciplines such as international relations, history, anthropology, economics, media studies or literature to build contextual knowledge and transferable skills.
• Capstone: a senior seminar or independent honours project requiring original research on a regional topic, often supervised by faculty and sometimes incorporating primary sources or field research.
• Experiential learning: internships, language immersion, study abroad or community-engaged projects strongly encouraged to develop practical competencies and professional networks.
