What you'll study

This programme combines theoretical foundations, practical teaching methods and clinical experience to prepare teacher candidates for work with learners who have mild to moderate and, in some placements, more significant disabilities. Course work typically covers child and adolescent development, foundations of special education, federal and state laws and ethical issues related to disability, and culturally responsive practices.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Typical admissions requirements include a completed application, academic transcripts showing college‑preparatory coursework, and a personal statement expressing interest in special education. Some programmes ask for letters of recommendation and an interview.

Because the programme leads toward work in schools, admitted students must be able to meet requirements for background checks and health clearances required by local school districts for participation in practicum placements; additional health or immunisation documentation may be required before entering clinical experiences.
