This undergraduate programme builds a foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, then applies those tools to environmental and resource issues. Core coursework typically includes intermediate microeconomic theory, intermediate macroeconomic theory, statistics for economists and econometrics, which prepare students to analyse data and evaluate policy interventions.

Specialist and elective modules focus on environmental topics such as environmental economics, natural resource and energy economics, cost–benefit analysis, public economics and environmental policy analysis. Courses commonly offered in this concentration include:

• Environmental Economics — market failures, externalities, valuation methods and policy instruments (taxes, permits, regulation)

Students can pursue quantitative electives such as calculus, advanced statistics, GIS for environmental applications, and computer programming for data analysis. The programme encourages internships and applied research with UMKC faculty or local partners in the Kansas City metropolitan area to gain practical experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a high school diploma or equivalent with a strong academic record. Successful candidates usually present coursework in mathematics (algebra and preferably calculus), and experience in statistics or economics is advantageous. Admissions may consider grades, letters of recommendation and a personal statement outlining interest in economics and environmental issues.

For international students, an equivalent secondary qualification is required along with evidence of English language proficiency where applicable. Transfer students are welcome; credit for previous college‑level economics, mathematics or statistics courses may be evaluated for transfer toward the degree.
