What you'll study

The Sociology major combines foundational theory and methods with applied learning relevant to urban and contemporary social issues. You will study classical and contemporary sociological theory, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and social statistics, alongside thematic courses that address race and ethnicity, gender, family, crime and deviance, work and organizations, and urban communities.

• Applied learning: Internship or practicum placements with community organisations, municipal agencies or research centres in New York City; community‑based research projects and service learning.
• Capstone/research: Senior seminar or independent senior thesis project that requires design and execution of an original research study or an applied policy/ programme analysis.
• Electives and cross‑disciplinary options: Students may take electives in related departments such as Political Science, Anthropology, Psychology, Economics and Criminal Justice to complement sociological study.
