What you'll study

The programme builds progressive Mandarin language competence from beginner to advanced levels and pairs language instruction with theoretical and historical study. Core topics include phonetics and phonology of Mandarin, Chinese syntax and morphology, sociolinguistics of Chinese-speaking communities, classical Chinese texts and modern Chinese literature, literary theory, translation practice, and research methods in linguistics and literary studies.

• Sequential Mandarin language courses focusing on speaking, listening, reading and writing, with emphasis on communicative fluency and literacy in simplified and traditional characters where offered.
• Introductory and advanced modules in Chinese linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics and dialectology.
