What you'll study

The Biology degree provides a foundation in the major areas of the life sciences while allowing specialisation through electives and research projects. You will study cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology, physiology and microbiology, supported by courses in chemistry, mathematics and statistics. Practical laboratory skills are developed throughout the programme in dedicated teaching labs, and students are introduced to modern techniques such as microscopy, molecular cloning, PCR, spectrophotometry and ecological survey methods.

Typical first-year modules include introductory biology, general chemistry and laboratory methods. In intermediate years you will take courses in genetics, ecology, organismal biology, biochemistry and microbiology, plus data analysis and experimental design. Senior-year work commonly includes advanced electives, a capstone research project or internship, and seminars that emphasise scientific communication and ethics.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a secondary school diploma or equivalent. Competitive applicants typically present strong grades in science and mathematics subjects; A-levels or equivalents in Biology and Chemistry (or a combination of Biology and Mathematics) are advantageous. Admissions may consider college preparatory science coursework, standardized test scores where applicable, letters of recommendation and a personal statement that demonstrates interest in the biological sciences.

Transfer students are welcome and credit may be awarded for prior college-level coursework after review. Mature applicants and those with relevant workplace experience are considered on an individual basis. Some programme pathways, such as pre-health advising, may have additional requirements or recommended preparatory courses.
