What you'll study

This programme develops practical language skills in one or more East Asian languages alongside courses in literature, culture and core linguistic theory. Study begins with progressive language courses (elementary, intermediate and advanced) emphasising speaking, listening, reading and writing, complemented by modules in pronunciation and conversation practice.

• Language sequence: Elementary through advanced courses in Chinese and/or Japanese (and in some cases other East Asian languages), regular placement testing and conversation labs to build fluency.
• Linguistics core: Introductory linguistics, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition as applied to East Asian languages.
• Literature and culture: Classical and modern East Asian literatures, film and visual culture, contemporary cultural studies, and courses on religion and history that contextualise literary works.
• Applied skills: Translation and interpreting practice, comparative rhetoric, media and discourse analysis, and courses in language pedagogy for those interested in teaching.
• Research and capstone: Options for a senior seminar, research methods, applied linguistics projects or a capstone thesis; opportunities for fieldwork and work with primary texts in the original language.
• Experiential learning: Study abroad exchanges, internships with international organisations, language immersion programmes, and service-learning projects that apply language skills in real-world settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school qualification. Typical entry expectations include a competitive academic record and evidence of readiness for university-level study. Native English speakers or applicants who have completed prior study in English usually meet language requirements; applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate English proficiency through recognised tests or other institutional proofs.

Additional application materials commonly requested include a personal statement outlining interest in East Asian languages and cultures, one or more academic references, and any relevant language transcripts or evidence of prior study. Incoming students may be required to take placement tests for appropriate entry into language courses; prior knowledge of an East Asian language is beneficial but not always required.
