What you'll study

The programme combines liberal arts coursework with professional education studies and supervised clinical experiences. Core coursework typically covers foundations of education, educational psychology and child development, curriculum and instruction, classroom management, and assessment practices. You will study methods courses tailored to the age range you plan to teach (elementary, middle or secondary), including literacy methods, mathematics and STEM pedagogy, social studies and humanities methods, and content-area strategies for secondary teachers.

Students complete multiple field placements that increase in responsibility over the course of the four years, culminating in an extended, supervised student teaching placement in partnership with area K–12 schools. Seminars on multicultural education, inclusion and special education, and technology in the classroom round out the programme. Many students also undertake a capstone project or reflective portfolio demonstrating their instructional planning, assessment use and professional growth.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a high school diploma or equivalent and submit an academic transcript. Admissions typically consider secondary school grades, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement describing interest in teaching and educational experience. Some applicants may be invited to an interview or to meet with the Education Department for advising.

Progression through the licensure sequence normally requires meeting departmental benchmarks such as a minimum cumulative GPA, successful completion of prerequisite education courses, satisfactory evaluations from field placements, and meeting the state’s required pre‑service assessments and background checks for working with children. Graduates who complete the licensure pathway are prepared to seek initial teaching certification and employment as elementary or secondary school teachers.
