What you'll study

The programme combines core engineering science and mathematics with applied civil engineering subjects and project work. Early years focus on calculus, linear algebra, physics, statics and dynamics, materials science and computer‑aided design. Later years introduce specialised civil topics such as structural analysis and design, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, transportation engineering, environmental and water resources engineering, construction management and surveying.

• Laboratory and practical work: materials testing, soils lab, hydraulics/flume experiments, structural testing, surveying fieldwork and CAD/CAM workshops.
• Design and capstone: multi‑semester senior design or capstone project that brings together site investigation, design calculations, drawings, specifications and project management considerations.
• Computing and software: engineering analysis software, finite element modelling basics, CAD/GIS and data analysis tools commonly used in practice.
• Professional practice: courses and modules on ethics, professional responsibility, construction law, cost estimating and preparation for licensure pathways.
• Experiential learning: internships, co‑op placements or summer industry projects are strongly encouraged to apply classroom learning in real‑world settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a secondary school diploma or equivalent with a strong background in mathematics (including algebra and calculus) and physics. Admissions typically consider academic record, recommendations and a statement of purpose; prior coursework in chemistry, computer science or technical drawing is an advantage. Norwich welcomes transfer students from community colleges and applicants with relevant technical qualifications.

International applicants must demonstrate equivalent secondary qualifications and adequate English language proficiency through recognised tests or institutional pathways. Mature applicants with relevant experience are considered on an individual basis. Placement testing in mathematics or additional preparatory courses may be required to ensure readiness for the engineering curriculum.
