What you'll study

This undergraduate programme combines core international relations theory with specialised study in national security, conflict and diplomacy. You will study comparative politics, international political economy, American foreign policy, security studies, and the history of international relations. Research methods and policy analysis courses teach qualitative and quantitative techniques for evaluating evidence and crafting policy recommendations. Language study is strongly encouraged and often integrated with regional courses (for example, courses on Latin America, Europe, the Middle East or Asia).

The curriculum typically includes a capstone or senior seminar that emphasises original research, simulations or policy papers. Electives allow you to pursue topics such as intelligence and coercive diplomacy, terrorism and counterterrorism, human security and development, cybersecurity and international law. Practical components — such as internships, practicum courses, model United Nations, or participation in research centres — are available to develop professional skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school diploma. Admissions decisions consider academic record, strength of coursework (particularly social studies, history and writing-intensive classes), recommendation letters and a personal statement that explains your interest in international relations and security.
