What you'll study

The programme combines core training in quantitative methods with applied policy coursework and a practicum or capstone project. Core topics typically include microeconomics for public policy, statistics and econometrics for policy analysis, program evaluation and impact assessment, cost–benefit analysis, and research design. Students also study policy-specific subjects such as social policy, health policy, education policy or environmental policy, depending on elective choices.

Teaching methods balance classroom instruction, hands-on data analysis, policy writing and group work. Practical learning is central: students complete a practicum or client-based capstone with a public agency, non-profit or research organisation in the Boston area or beyond. Opportunities for coursework in qualitative methods, GIS for policy, machine learning for social science and ethics in policy practice are usually available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline. Typical admissions materials include academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining policy interests and goals, a current résumé or CV, and letters of recommendation. Brandeis considers applicants with quantitative preparation, but the programme is accessible to candidates with social science, humanities or professional backgrounds who demonstrate quantitative readiness.

Some applicants have prior work experience in public service, non-profits or related fields; this can strengthen an application but is not always mandatory. International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements. Standardised test policies (such as the GRE) vary; applicants should consult the school for current guidance.
