What you'll study

The MA in Sociology provides core training in sociological theory and research methods alongside a range of substantive electives. Typical core courses include advanced sociological theory, social research methods, and multivariate statistical analysis. Students usually take additional methods-focused courses such as qualitative methods, survey research, and causal inference, and choose electives in areas like race and ethnicity, migration, family and life course, gender, labour and organisations, culture, crime and punishment, and political sociology.

Programme structure is flexible to accommodate both students aiming for doctoral study and those preparing for careers in policy, nonprofits or the private sector. Students complete a combination of coursework and a substantial research component — either a thesis or a practicum-based capstone project — supervised by faculty. Seminars, research colloquia and opportunities to collaborate with faculty on ongoing projects are central elements of the curriculum.

Entry requirements

• A completed undergraduate degree (BA/BS) from an accredited institution, normally with strong academic performance in the social sciences or related fields.
• Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
• A statement of purpose that explains academic interests, research experience, and professional or academic goals.
• Two to three letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees who can speak to the applicant’s preparation for graduate study.
• A current CV or résumé documenting research, work experience and relevant skills.
• Proof of English proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English; acceptable tests and score thresholds are set by the university.
• Standardised test requirements (such as the GRE) vary; applicants should consult the department for current policy.
