What you'll study

The programme blends foundational education courses with specialised study in disabilities, assessment and instructional strategies. Early semesters focus on child development, learning theory, and the historical and legal context of special education. Core special education modules typically include assessment and evaluation of students with disabilities, differentiated and evidence-based instructional methods, behaviour management and positive behaviour support, individualised education program (IEP) development, and transition planning for secondary-age students.

Students also study curriculum adaptations for literacy and numeracy, assistive and adaptive technology, collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams, and cultural and linguistic diversity in special education. Coursework is integrated with progressive field experiences — from classroom observations and small-group interventions to extended placements — culminating in a full-term student teaching placement in a public school setting where licensure competencies are demonstrated.

Entry requirements

Applicants will need a high school diploma or equivalent and should meet Idaho State University’s general admission standards. Entrance to the teacher education sequence normally requires completion of specified prerequisite coursework (such as introductory education, psychology, and basic writing), a minimum cumulative GPA as set by the College of Education, and successful passage of any program entry screenings.

Because the programme prepares candidates for state teacher licensure, students must also meet state-mandated requirements such as background checks, health clearances, and completion of required fingerprinting. Candidates should be prepared to satisfy any basic skills or professional knowledge assessments required by the state or university prior to student teaching.
