What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines core sciences, nursing theory and progressive clinical practice. Early study focuses on anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nutrition and applied statistics. Nursing-specific courses introduce health assessment, fundamentals of nursing, adult medical–surgical nursing, maternal–child nursing, paediatric nursing, mental health nursing and community/public health nursing.

Later semesters build skills in clinical judgement, care of complex and chronic conditions, leadership and management, quality improvement, informatics and ethical/legal issues in healthcare. Students complete coursework in nursing research and evidence-based practice to prepare for roles in nursing research and to support clinical decision-making.

Clinical learning is delivered through progressively responsible practicum placements in hospitals, community health settings and long-term care, supported by simulation lab sessions and interprofessional learning experiences. Many programmes or pathways within the BSN emphasise areas such as nursing administration (leadership, finance, staffing, policy), nursing research (research methods, data interpretation, project design) and clinical nursing (advanced assessment, critical care, specialty practicum).

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a high school diploma or equivalent and to have completed specified prerequisite college coursework, typically including anatomy and physiology, general biology, chemistry, microbiology, and college-level English or communication and statistics. A competitive cumulative GPA in prerequisite courses is usually expected, and some programmes use a selective admission process that may consider science GPA, test scores where applicable, and healthcare experience.

Additional requirements often include submission of transcripts, proof of immunisations, current CPR certification, a criminal background check and successful completion of drug screening prior to clinical placements. Transfer students should check credit-transfer policies and may need to provide course descriptions for prerequisite equivalency. Registered nurses seeking a BSN via RN-to-BSN admission must hold an active RN license and provide proof of prior nursing education and licensure.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nurses and to practise as staff RNs in acute care, community health, long-term care and outpatient settings. With additional experience or postgraduate study, alumni commonly move into roles such as charge nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse manager, case manager, nurse educator, clinical nurse leader and public health nurse.

Those who follow the nursing administration pathway are well positioned for leadership and operational roles in healthcare organisations, while graduates who focus on nursing research can support evidence-based practice, quality improvement projects and participation in clinical research teams. The BSN also provides a foundation for graduate study (master’s and doctoral degrees) for careers in advanced clinical practice, nursing education, administration and research.
