What you'll study

This interdisciplinary programme brings together language proficiency, literary study and linguistic theory. Students typically take a combination of language courses at progressive levels (beginner to advanced), literature modules that cover historical and contemporary traditions, and core linguistics units covering the structure and use of language.

• Language modules: sequence-based instruction in Spanish, French, Italian and/or Portuguese focused on speaking, listening, reading and writing, plus pronunciation and conversation workshops.
• Literature and culture: survey courses in medieval, early modern and modern literatures; film and media studies; cultural history of Romance-speaking regions; and genre- or period-specific seminars.
• Linguistics: foundations in phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and sociolinguistics, with specialised topics in Romance linguistics such as historical linguistics and comparative grammar.
• Applied and theoretical options: language acquisition, translation and interpreting practice, discourse analysis, language policy and planning, and corpus-based methods.
• Research and capstone: research methods for humanities and social science, independent project or dissertation in the final year, and opportunities for conference presentations.
• Practical experience: internships, language-teaching practicums, and study-abroad semesters or summer programmes in Romance-language countries to develop real-world fluency and intercultural competence.

Entry requirements

Admission is based on a completed secondary-school qualification or equivalent recognised by the university. Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate prior study in a language or evidence of language-learning aptitude; however, beginners may be accommodated through introductory streams. Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining interest in languages and culture, and one or more references.

Non-native English speakers must provide evidence of English language proficiency through an approved test score or other recognised credential unless otherwise exempt. Some language-stream placements may require internal or externally recognised proficiency tests to ensure appropriate course level.
