What you'll study

The programme combines core doctoral coursework, intensive supervised clinical training, and an original research dissertation. Coursework covers advanced psychopathology, psychological assessment and diagnostics, theories and methods of psychotherapy, research design and statistics, ethics and professional issues, and multicultural and community psychology. Students also take specialised modules in areas such as child and adolescent clinical practice, health psychology, neuropsychological assessment, trauma and crisis intervention, and couples and family therapy.

Training emphasises applied competencies: practicum placements within community agencies, hospitals and specialised clinics provide progressive direct client contact under faculty supervision. Students complete a comprehensive exam or portfolio to demonstrate mastery of theory and practice and undertake a structured sequence of supervised internships to meet practicum hour requirements prior to graduation. The doctoral dissertation requires original empirical research that contributes to clinical or counselling practice, policy, or applied psychological science.

Entry requirements

• Academic qualifications: A recognised master’s degree in psychology, counselling or a closely related field with a strong academic record.
• Clinical experience: Evidence of prior supervised clinical practice or practicum experience is expected; applicants without substantial practicum hours may be considered only in exceptional circumstances.
• Application materials: Curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining research interests and professional goals, and two or more professional/academic references.
• Interview: Shortlisted candidates are typically invited to an interview with programme faculty to discuss fit, research plans and clinical interests.
• Language proficiency: Competence in Spanish is highly desirable given the programme’s Puerto Rico context and emphasis on bilingual/multicultural practice; proof of English proficiency may be required for some applicants.
• Additional requirements: Some applicants may be asked to submit a writing sample or research proposal. Applicants must satisfy any regulatory requirements for clinical training placements.
