What you'll study

The programme centres on the political, social and cultural history of Europe from the late antiquity and medieval periods through the early modern era. You will take core courses in historiography and research methods and examine subjects such as medieval political institutions, the history of religion and reformations, urban and rural life, gender and family, the history of science and medicine, material culture, and the history of art and book production.

Training emphasises primary-source literacy: palaeography, manuscript and archival work, and reading skills for languages commonly used in the sources (for example Latin and early modern vernaculars) are offered or supported through language course sequences. Methodological and technical options include digital humanities, quantitative history, mapping and GIS for historical research, and textual editing.
