What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines foundational sciences and liberal studies with nursing theory, evidence-based practice and supervised clinical experiences. Core topics include anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment and fundamentals of nursing practice. Progressing into the major, students study adult medical-surgical nursing, maternal–child health, paediatric nursing, mental health/psychiatric nursing, community and public health nursing, and care of older adults.

Specialist strands emphasise different professional pathways: the Nursing Administration focus covers leadership, human resource management, healthcare finance and organisational behaviour; the Nursing Research strand centres on research methods, statistics, evidence-based practice and quality improvement; the Clinical Nursing emphasis deepens assessment, complex care management, clinical reasoning and advanced practicum experiences. All students complete simulation-based learning and multiple clinical placements in hospitals, community agencies and long-term care settings, plus a culminating capstone or practicum that integrates theory, research and clinical decision-making.

Entry requirements

• Secondary school completion or equivalent with demonstrated achievement in science and mathematics (biology and chemistry highly recommended).
• A competitive cumulative grade point average; meeting the college and departmental minimums is required for progression to upper-level nursing courses.
• Completion of prerequisite courses such as human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, microbiology, and developmental psychology or sociology prior to entry to clinical nursing courses.
• Successful completion of any required admissions assessments or departmental screening where applicable.
• Clearance of health requirements including current immunisations, tuberculosis testing, basic life support (BLS) certification, and successful criminal background check and drug screen for clinical placement eligibility.
• For registered nurses entering an RN-to-BSN route: an active RN licence or evidence of eligibility for licensure and completion of an accredited diploma or associate degree in nursing.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national licensing examination to become registered nurses and find employment across acute care hospitals, community health agencies, primary care practices, rehabilitation and long-term care facilities. Those who follow the Nursing Administration pathway commonly move into charge nurse, nurse manager, case coordination and department leadership roles. Graduates who focus on Nursing Research or evidence-based practice work in quality improvement, clinical research coordination, outcomes measurement and academic or policy roles. The Clinical Nursing emphasis prepares graduates for specialist bedside roles, advanced clinical teams and opportunities leading to postgraduate study such as clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner programmes.
