What you'll study

This PhD combines advanced coursework, intensive research methods training and an original dissertation to prepare scholars and practitioner-leaders. Core study areas typically include leadership theory and ethics, organisational theory for education, supervision and instructional leadership, curriculum and assessment, school finance and law, and education policy analysis.

Students normally complete a sequence of research methods courses covering quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods design, multivariate statistics, measurement and program evaluation. Coursework is complemented by seminars in topics such as equity and social justice in education, change management, and community and family engagement.

The programme structure generally involves coursework in the early years, comprehensive/qualifying examinations, a research apprenticeship with faculty advisers, and the dissertation phase. Many students engage in practicum experiences or field-based projects with partner school districts and have opportunities to work as teaching or research assistants.

Entry requirements

• Academic background: A recognised master’s degree in education or a closely related field is usually required. Candidates with an outstanding master’s record or equivalent professional experience will be considered.
