What you'll study

The programme provides a foundation in biological, chemical and environmental sciences alongside specialised training in environmental health disciplines. Core topics include environmental toxicology, exposure assessment, environmental microbiology, occupational and industrial hygiene, environmental epidemiology, and risk assessment.

• Foundational sciences: general chemistry, organic chemistry or chemical principles, human biology, and microbiology to support understanding of environmental hazards.
• Environmental health core: courses in toxicology, exposure pathways, air and water quality, environmental sampling and analysis, and occupational health and safety.
• Quantitative skills: biostatistics, environmental data analysis, and introductory geographic information systems (GIS) for spatial analysis of environmental risks.
• Policy and management: environmental law and regulation, risk communication, emergency preparedness and environmental health program planning.
• Practical experience: laboratory classes, field sampling exercises, and a supervised practicum or internship with public health agencies, industry or consulting firms. Many students complete a capstone project or research practicum addressing a local or regional environmental health issue.
• Electives and interdisciplinary study: options to take electives in public health, sustainability, engineering, or community health to tailor the degree to specific interests.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have completed a secondary school qualification equivalent to a US high school diploma with strong preparation in science and mathematics. Typical preparation includes courses in biology, chemistry and mathematics (algebra and preferably precalculus or calculus). Admissions consider academic record, personal statement, and any relevant extracurricular experience such as laboratory work, community health volunteering, or environmental internships.

For transfer applicants or those coming from international systems, successful admission normally requires evidence of comparable academic preparation and readiness for university-level science coursework. Students whose first language is not English will be asked to demonstrate proficiency through an approved English language qualification.
