This interdisciplinary programme combines social science and humanities perspectives to explore how global forces shape societies, economies and cultures. Core topics typically include theories of globalization, global governance, international political economy, development studies, migration and transnationalism, and cultural/global media studies.

• Foundations of Globalization: theoretical approaches to global integration, historical roots and contemporary debates.
• Regional and Area Studies: focused study on world regions (e.g. Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia) to understand local responses to global processes.
• International Political Economy: trade, finance, multinational corporations and institutions that regulate the global economy.
• Development and Human Rights: policy analyses of development strategies, poverty, inequality and human rights frameworks.

Entry requirements

Admission is through the University of Iowa undergraduate application process and follows the general entry requirements for bachelors-level programmes. Typical expectations include a high school diploma or equivalent with a competitive academic record and completion of college-preparatory subjects. Coursework in social studies, history and a foreign language is advantageous.

For international applicants, proof of English language proficiency (for example through recognised tests or prior instruction in English) is required. Transfer applicants are assessed on post-secondary transcripts and may need to meet specific department or college prerequisites.
