What you'll study

The MTSU Master of Science in Nursing builds on professional nursing practice with advanced theory, evidence-based practice and leadership development. Students complete a programme of core graduate nursing courses plus a chosen focus in Nursing Administration, Nursing Research or Clinical Nursing. Typical core topics include advanced health assessment, pharmacology for advanced practice, healthcare policy and ethics, advanced pathophysiology, and research methods and statistics.

In the Nursing Administration focus, coursework emphasises organisational leadership, quality improvement, finance and human resource management for healthcare settings. The Nursing Research focus covers quantitative and qualitative research design, program evaluation, data analysis and preparation for scholarly dissemination. The Clinical Nursing focus prepares clinicians for advanced patient assessment and management, care coordination and specialty practicum experiences; students pursuing clinical specialisation often complete supervised clinical practicum hours and a clinical capstone.

All tracks include a culminating scholarly requirement such as a capstone project, practicum portfolio or thesis option, and opportunities to work in simulation settings and with clinical partners in the region.

Entry requirements

• Current, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) licence from a US state or equivalent documentation for international applicants.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited programme. Applicants with an ADN may be considered where an approved bridge pathway is available; contact the school for details.
• A competitive undergraduate GPA; programmes typically expect satisfactory academic performance in prior nursing and science coursework.
• Submission of official transcripts, a current résumé or curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose outlining professional goals and reasons for choosing the specific MSN focus, and professional references.
• Some applicants may be required to complete prerequisite coursework (for example statistics or health assessment) prior to or early in the programme, and certain tracks require placement clearance for practicum (background check, immunisations, health screening).
• International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements and provide credential evaluation for foreign degrees.
