What you'll study

The programme provides a balanced curriculum across physical geography, human geography and the technical foundations of cartography and geographic information science (GIScience). Core topics typically include map design and cartographic theory, GIS and spatial analysis, remote sensing and image interpretation, field methods and geographic data collection, statistics for the geosciences, and landscape and environmental systems. Elective modules allow specialisation in areas such as urban and regional geography, biogeography, hydrology, transportation geography, geovisualisation and spatial modelling.

Practical learning is emphasised: students gain hands-on experience with industry-standard GIS software, remote sensing tools, GPS data collection, and map production. The curriculum commonly culminates in an applied capstone or senior project in which students design and implement a spatial-analysis or cartographic product, often in partnership with local agencies or research groups.

Entry requirements

Admission is at the bachelor level and normally requires a recognised high school diploma or equivalent. Admissions typically consider academic performance across relevant subjects; preparation in mathematics, geography, earth science, computer science or statistics is advantageous. Applicants without prior GIS experience are welcome, as the programme begins with foundational courses.

International applicants must meet NAU's English language proficiency requirements. Transfer students with relevant college credit in geography, GIS, mathematics or computer science may receive credit towards degree requirements; specific credit transfer is assessed on an individual basis.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers that use spatial data and mapping skills. Common roles include GIS technician/analyst, cartographer or map designer, remote sensing analyst, environmental consultant, natural resource specialist, transportation analyst, urban and regional planning assistant, and positions in emergency management and public health mapping. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in geography, geospatial sciences, environmental science or planning.
