What you'll study

The programme provides a broad grounding in the major areas of psychology alongside intensive training in research methods and quantitative analysis. You will take core courses such as introductory psychology, research design, and statistics, and then move into specialised modules including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, biological bases of behaviour (neuroscience), abnormal psychology and personality.

Students choose between more empirically focused and applied pathways and normally complete laboratory courses or practicum placements. Typical components include:

• Research methods and experimental design
• Statistical analysis for behavioural sciences
• Laboratory courses with hands-on data collection and analysis
• Advanced seminars in areas such as cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, developmental psychopathology or social cognition
• Capstone experience: options often include an independent honours thesis, senior research project or practicum under faculty supervision
• Electives that may cover topics such as health psychology, forensic psychology, human factors/UX, industrial–organisational psychology or computational modelling

Students are encouraged to join faculty research labs early in their studies and can combine psychology with related disciplines such as neuroscience, statistics, computer science or public health to suit specific career goals.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a strong secondary-school record demonstrating academic readiness for university-level study. Typical successful applicants will have taken mathematics and coursework that demonstrates quantitative reasoning; background in biology or social science is beneficial but not always required. For international applicants, completion of a recognised secondary qualification with strong grades is expected.

The University of Rochester reviews applications holistically, taking into account academic performance, teacher recommendations, personal statements and any relevant extracurricular or research experience.
